I've just noticed that vpopmail must be recompiled if you are using --enable-roaming-users=y and still want to block bad reverse dns hosts... just add the desired variable in vpopmail.c after RBLSMTPD=\"\" and all will be ok...
by adding some env variable in the cdb file after the relayed ip addresses... e.g. NOBADMAILFROM="1"

Hi,
Curt, sounds like you want double-bounces (bounced bounces) to go to a black hole. In your qmail alis dir, make a file .qmail-doublebounce and just put a # in it. Then in the control dir, make a doublebounceto file and put doublebounce in it. That will relieve you of the double-bounce going to the postmaster. Reject during the initial SMTP conversation instead of bouncing to
Thanks for your great resource!
I've been running SA for a few months now (in conjunction with TMDA), and am simply not impressed with its effectiveness. Much of the spam that I'm seeeing is simply being generated in such a way that the rules are not picking up on the body constructs. Bayesian filtering doesn't seem to pick up much of what slips through the rulesets either.
This is going to sting a little. I have tossed the monthly bill for

Hey Chris ... just decided to surf and found your page through the EC website! Gosh, I remember when you and Mark started this whole thing when we were in school. Hi Chris,
Thanks for giving this good documentaion I am designing my website. I would like to share some my experience about web design for everyone. if you attend for, please contact with me through Email
This is an awesome site. Keep up the good work! I run a 3 character .com domain and received a lot of spam too, to the point where qmail's queue was quite full. I wanted to address it at the SMTP level in order to make a dent in the traffic (I also block using ipchains/iptables but that's a hassle and spammers can just move on to another open relay).
In addition to part V

Nathan is correct that dropping the connection is not a good practice (nor RFC-conformant). Not sure why "mj" is so negative but I like your website and would like to know if you mind me linking to your page from my page http://www.elliotholden.com
One of the best insight towards antispam that I have read.
I'm happily running SpamProbe, another Bayesian filter written in C++, in a getmail/qmail/vpopmail mailsystem on a small split-horizon subdomain LAN. I'm in the (slow) process of writing a piece on how I got it all to work, but you can look for SpamProbe on freshmeat.net right now. I haven`t had my wisdom teeth removed yet. Our money is going towards my college so we can`t afford the surgery yet. I might seem a nerd, but why removing your teeth? ref your qmail web page.
I got to see this after a link to a page on your web site failed. The quote on the link amused me and made me want to investigate. A man of many talents, that's for sure! From a cool and windy Cape Town, best of luck (you don't appear to need any though...) After patching qmail by qregex patch and mfcheck patch I saw that no information about messages blocked by mail server was written to the log file. Therefore I wrote some code to implement this logging. You can download my patch at http://www.svm.cz/~jirka/qmail. It's a combination of qregex patch, mfcheck patch and simple logging feature.
wow.....what a subject yes. you need to remove the wisdom tooth. the angle at which it rests is bothersome. it lays against your molar and will undoubtedly cause decay below the gumline on the adjacet molar. the angle at which the root of the wisdom tooth resides, shows it will require surgery for removal. have details hardie clan in scotland I used all the techniques but I think bayesian (?sp) filters are very enticing. I run an ISP and although not really feasable on the server level there it is very feasable on the server level if you are also running a mail server at your house.
Sure go for it. I only charge $300/tooth. ;) The Long Walk by Slavomir Rawicz is good adventure reading about human endurance and the will to live. You'll enjoy "Sun also rises" when you get to it. I didn't care much for Merton or Gore. I'm currently reading "Grand Central Winter" by Lee Stringer. Note that returning "451 bad reverse DNS" indicates a temporary failure. This means the originating machine will a) hang on to the mail and b) re-attempt delivery at some later time. In the case of spam this will backlog the mail at the originating machine but you will see numerous subsequent connection attempts in your log file. Depending on your bandwidth and volume this may or not be a good thing, but it does force the (presumably open relay) system to hang onto the spam a bit longer. RFC 2821 says that returning 554 bad reverse DNS would be a better solution, but the above does not follow the RFC in that it immediately drops the connection instead of waiting for a QUIT command later on. Ironically, the spammers tend to honor 554 error codes and systems configured as open relays probably will too.
All this are so good for me.thanks. thanx.. for your site, so i know that qmail have hole on it.. i had given rcpthost but some spammer still can relay mail from my smtp.. i'm very streess.. fortunely i found your pages.. i hope after i patch my qmail, my smtp can more be secure... Are there any scientific concepts in this book?
This is a really nice little commentary on Earlham. The more i hear about it, the more i am dying to go. Thanks for posting such a nice site about the school!
Thanks to Jesus for His love, or I would not have been here. Where would I be if it wasn't for Him? I was able to keep my teeth. I'm so glad! please change the obfuscation with REMOVETHIS to unicode or something like email-at-domainDOTde
Surely there is no need to have them removed? I've only got one wisdom tooth myself, think another is coming, going to leave them to it!! I am facing the following situation: my server is getting bombarded with spam with a blank field from, so adding these bastards to the badmailfrom is not a solution.
http://www.geocities.com/ishmaelbook/index.html
I have the same problem. My tooth is not hurting me so I am gonna try to avoid getting it pulled out as long as I can. My mom is in the same situation, and she has not had any problems with the the wisdom tooth. >Using Tagged Messages and Special/Dedicated E-mail Addresses.
My wisdom teeth is hurting me. It caused a painful infection that I am currently bearing. I am just doing some research before I know what I am doing but I think if you could remove those teeth before they have a chance to hurt you. I would recommand to get it removed! In my country they will only remove a thing when it's rotten :-) I especially appreciate the helpful illustrative graphics, they really bring the process together I'm so glad I found out that tcpserver -p didn't reject mail. I use rblsmtpd and wrote a program called tcpremotecheck that performs a similar function to your shell script. However, it also utilizes the RBLSMTPD environment variable for relay checking and performs the proper SMTP negotiations to return the failure message to the sender. Super job. but Im voting LIBERTARIAN
You are losing the point of the whole assignment by asking others. Go back and reread - you are all intelligent engough to come up with your own answers! Great resource, quoted part of it in a Slashdot posting:

Saw your comments on EC. Didin't you feel Richmomd was a dead town and the college got smaller the longer you were there? Waht do you do now? Hello, i am doing a project on Ishmael by Daniel Quinn, we have to find all the key thoughts that Ishmael discusses throughout the story. IF anyone could give me any information regarding Ishmael i would GREATLY appreciate it. THank YOU!!! Ok this a werid little Melanie and pawell you say hardliners beat people up and shit because they do drugs this is not true hardliners do not beat people up i don't know where people get this idea about hardliners Besides its not true because am hardline and i have never beat'in up anybody HARDLINERS are militant straight edge so we go to extreme but not beating up people because they do drugs Simply hardliners are Just Vegans and Animal rights activist (ALF) and they promote the vegan movement this idea is wrong hardline is a nonviolent in some ways in some ways we do not force ideas down people's Throats OK Am sorry i seem angry am not its cool if you don't like hardline i don't care but don't say that kinda of stuff unless you know the movement because if you judge hardline because of what people say thats not cool WOW! I READ THIS BOOK MONTHS AGO AND AM JUST VISITING THIS SIGHT NOW, HOWEVER CERTAINLY QUINN DOES NOT PUSH THE TIME BACK EXACTLY 2000 YEARS ONLY TO THROW THE READER OFF. THE POWER AND REALITY OF A GREAT FORGETTING IS EXPRESSED IN THE MOST AMAZING WAY IN AD. BY DRAWING THE READER INTO A COMPARISON BETWEEN HITLAR AND CHRIST WE CAN TRULY ACCEPT THAT OUR HISTORY MAY BE ANY DEGREE OF A MANUFACTURED FICTION. WOW! THIS IS AN IMPROTANT LESSON IN HISTORY AND REALITY. THIS IS AN EASY WAY TO SHATTER A PARADIGM OR TWO IN A SINGLE AFTERNOON. Another book that I highly recommend with Quinn's work is...A Language Older Than Words by:Derrick Jensen.
Hallo Chris,
Thanks for a nicely written doc. I am glad that tmda made it into
your howto. It has support for qmail. I would
recommend it for
any qmail admin setting up a new domain. What is that ????????? this book was listed as a reading requirement for my social changes class this semester. o how i wish i had bought the book instead of checking it out of the public library! i may go ahead and buy it anyway, as this seems to be quite valuable insight into human culture. thank you for writing such a marvelous book! Chris,
Qmail-scanner is a generic tool for scanning the mail queue in a qmail system. Its documentation focus on anti-viral features, but the qmail-scanners internal scanner can just as easily be programmed to filter repeating header elements that spammers use.
The most useful, simple and detailed how-to for preventing spam. I am searching for a Hardie family or Dudder or Dewar that have scottish background. My grandmother was born in New Zealand and raised in Edinburgh and then emmigrated to Canada. I already posted something so do not expect too much. Thank-you. With the increasing "attachment" spams and HTML formating / credit card scams it is important to check valadility of outgoing and incoming mail. Perhaps a system that would check mailback attachment senders to validate would be in the best ineterest of the end user? So many options, so many opinions. I like your guide. I found it very helpful! I am very glad to see that some teachers are requiring the reading to Ishmael- but why dont you kids take advantage of such a great opportunity? If i hadnt been so busy dealing with the traditional school system i was forced to go through, i may have been able to branch out and find works as valuable as Quinn's long ago. Its great if youre reading the book and really trying to understand it, but if youre trying to evade reading the book, then youre losing a great chance to figure all this stuff out early. I myself do not have the pleasure of reading much. "My job" keeps the pages of enlightment out of my reach. I am a 46 year young woman that does what she can for the good of all humanity. I work in surgery. In which after reading this book , had me asking myself, am I too a part of the problem with our world? By not letting "nature" run it's course? I decided , I may be according to this book, but my heart tells me this is what I was born to do. With this said, I wish to let you know however, I did enjoy reading Ishmael. I have a 15 year daughter. I had picked up this book for her to read for school. I always try to scan through the books they have to read. I found that once I opened the pages of Ishmael, I could not put it down! Working full time did present a bit of a problem, as to the fact I had just three days before she had to take the book to school.I would like to thank Mr. Quinn for taking the time to write this book. I did indeed learn to look at life and the way we live in a completely different way. Maybe it isn't too late to change our world! I would find it most difficult to "let nature take it's own course", but I do see the logic behind it. To me this would seem to be "cold and uncaring", but maybe over the thousands of years ........we , some of us , have been "programed" to feel this way??? It is a fact that "we" have to do something, look at life in a whole different way if we are to save ourselves. I am sure it won't be "my generation" that will try to turn things around. Seems we are too "material minded" in oder to to this!! I do have hope for our children however, that is ....IF we haven't made "Takers" of them to the point of no return!!
Did I tell you about my oral surgeon, named Dr. Rip? I hope your recovery goes as smoothly as mine did, perhaps because I'm Amazonian in strength. Ola
My father is named David Hardie Kaelble. The Hardie middle name has come through old family traditions within the years. My brother Robert Hardie Kaelble is proof that the Hardie family goes on. My Mother and Father have been to Scotland and had a tour of a Hardie farm. I hope you will email me back. Please. Susan Louise Kaelble-Forsen I needed a source for a paper and this will work. God bless the internet. Did the movement really die shortly thereafter in each of these cases? Just curious A book that travels a similar path is "The last hous of ancient sunlight" by "Thom Hartman". Check it out. You need to have it removed. Definitely. At the same time, have all of your other teeth removed also. That way, you never ever have to see the denist again and you can eat all the candy you want. You won't have to brush either. Having teeth is just a drag. You can do it yourself with a grip. I need help on figuring out how the Taker's way of life might affect the human gene pool. Thanks! HI there may be you could help my english teacher wants me to write an essay on the main character of Ishmael. I don;t really got the story i get kind of it though. Here I will give you a question and let me know how i would go upon answering that. IT is "Is your character undergoing significant conflicts? I have to pick one of the two the other topic is that "HOw your character changed from the begining to the middle of the book?" Which one do u think will be easier to work on, please email me if you have any suggestions or any answers to these question and i would really appericate that. Thanx mike
You definatley do not want to see Clockwork orange. It is one of the worst films I have ever seen. (Not that I got to the end - I turned it off half-way through) I have it done all the time hmm, i got all 4 removed but two a time I'd go ahead and have it removed.
with your view of straight edge. I think that you have definately overgeneralized about sxe. Why is it not ok, for someone to say to a friend "I don not want to ingest poison to celebrate your happiness because everyone else it is culturally acceptable"? why is that somehow following the herd? sxe is a personal choice. I do not want to put poisons and chemicals into my body. I MAKE THAT CHOICE everyday. I have always tried to look at the world as it is and not how i want to see it, untill i read the story of b, i didnt realize i wasnt looking deep enough.i wanted to thank the author for showing me the first steps into a new world philosophy. Don't do it man! They're just out to get your money! Or, you could do it yourself by tying one end of a string around your tooth and the other around a door handle. Slam door and your home free. Or you could tie the other end to Mark... I have to say I am always rather startled by the imaginative characters, settings, and fantastic elements DQ uses to reveal his powerful themes. After Dachau was a surprise to me, even though I picked up the book expecting to be surprised. But while part of me finds myself wondering if it was really necessary to set the story in the distant future, make reincarnation a reality, etc. to get the point across. My conclusion is that if it works, then why not use it, and After Dachau definitely works. And besides, it's a great read. I found myself noticing (for the first time?) DQ's masterful use of language. He writes with brevity and clarity. What I appreciate most about this book is its ability to jolt the reader out of his/her comfort zone in order to force him/her to realize the very real possibility of having illusions similar to those of the society in A.D. Additionally, as Chris points out, the book is a great inspiration for the activist, who may often feel as though he or she is working to revolutionize a society that, simply, doesn't care. I have a project for an English class on the book Ishmael, and I was wondering if you could help me with the following topic. Describe the difference between the takers and givers, and which one is most evident in our society today. Just remove that sucker! If you feel disconfort with it, then I would recomend it removed, but, if not then leave your life happily unremoved, unless your get a psychological bud feeling about it.
I have to make a presentation on the following topic: DESCRIBE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN TAKERS AND LEAVERS AS DESCRIBED BY QUINN. WHICH GROUP IS MOST EVIDENT IN OUR CULTURE? I have tooth ace now.. I am working on the nearly ultimate solution against spam - no joke. Details can be found on my project page at

As sampson cut his hair and lost muscle power, I hear something similar can happen with wisdom teeth. Let me know. i have 4 wisdom teeth that are fine for me, they aren't at an angle to any of my teeth. i did get 4 other tooths pulled when i was younger though, so when the wisdom teeth came in, they didn't screw up anything. since your tooth is at an angle, it looks very threatening! :) and it may have been worth looking at 10thousand guestbooks tonight. there are some patches to use:
http://www.orbz.org/. This one is doing active scanning of relays, using lists imported from various other relay databases. Net-wide blocks aren't done, no politics involved; if an email finds it's way back to the scanner, it's blackholed. Plain and simple. Hi,
ORBS has died last month (JUN 01)
The patch to rblsmtpd to allow it to use A records instead of TXT records is available here: Well, I finally read AD and I devoured it.
There is a quote from George Orwell's "1984" that I think might aptly reflect the central theme of "After Dachau"... "Whoever controls the past controls the future and whoever controls the present controls the past." Remind me to tell you a story sometime Chris... teeth, that is... there's surely no harm in removing wisdom teeth - except for the initial post-surgucal discomfort, and possible infection if you are not careful. i had all mine taken out in one go... lived on motrin for a little while (t3 didn't do jack!). my vote goes for removal. That is certainly not impacted. Just a little angled. Looks like a real easy take out to me. Go to a oral surgeon instead of a dentist. They will give you an IV and you'll be out like a light. Not everyone experiences high discomfort when its over although I did. Insist on perkaset or perkadan for a pain killer and not Tylenol 3 w/codeine. Thats really not sufficient if you indeed have pain. Good luck! Chris, I think you've done great things with this website. I understand what you're saying about the possibilities and why a personal website. It's refreshing when people see things for their potential instead of a free for all "look at my dog." I hope your website proves revolutionary. It might already be. Let me know if you're doing a future Ishcon. ...not necessarily in your mouth.
As far as I know, rblsmtpd does not support MAPS because they changed their zone files. as you quote (Mike Silbersack says "If you wish to use the *.mail-abuse.org black-hole lists, you'll have to apply the patch to make rblsmptd work with A records")
You probably would want to remove that sucka! I've had problems with my wisdom teeth for sometime now 3+ years, and believe me, whatever cost+pain you'll feel taking them out will be worth it in the long run! :) http://www.fehcom.de/qmail/filter.html
The appeal and in my opinion greatness of the ishmael books is that the points it isllustrates are done in such a logical way that it's impossible to come up with an equally locical counter argument. The only counter arguments are the one that already exist. That problems are solved with money, humans are flawed beings and exist outside of nature and that we can control everything only if we try a little harder. When I discuss the link between increase of food availability and the resultant increase in population, people invariably ask me something to the effect of, "well what about those starving now? If they can't eat on what they have now (be it sent from elsewhere or taken locally) how are they going to survive on that next year? You're talking about a die-back." And indeed it seems that is what I'm talking about. When a species with an exponential population growth exceeds it's food resources, there is a resultant decline in population until there are few enough individuals for the population to be supported by it's environment. Now I understand that First World farmers continue throwing kerosine onto the fire, as it were, by sending food to populations already past their threshold point in regards to food availability. If that food were withdrawn, wouldn't the populations experience die-back? I'm aware a similar question was already asked, but your short parable didn't quite answer the question for me. Perhaps you're suggesting that the loss of life in a die-back is preferable due to its evanescance while the current situation is worse because the loss of life has no end in sight. If you could clarify this, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thank you. You seem to be real down to earth Mr. Hardie and I think thats what we need in a president. No more puppets with hands up their ass. So follow what you feel and never let anyone tell you otherwise. Oh and one more thing.... When you are president think you could legalize marijuana? Look into it and give it a chance. Peace I am not a reader at all but this book has allowed me the opertunity to just curl up to the book and enjoy.
straigt edge is the way of peaceful worrior.there's no place for violence. hardline is a crap and should be destroyed as well as fascism and racism. peace&love. Ho, Ho, Ho Chi Minh; The NLF is gonna win. FYI--
For an AP English Language class I take, our teacher wants us to find the argument of Ishmael and form a counterarument to that of the gorilla. I just finished reading the book and I wanted to know if you could help me. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Hello Chris --

>People. ORBS does not block becase some of your custommers spammed someone. It it lists Open Relays.
It should be pointed out that comparing qmail to Exchange is really comparing apples to oranges. But more specific to the original question, YES, qmail supports authenticated POP.
Chris, you have my vote and support for your 2012 campaign. And 2016, and 2020, and however many times it takes you to be elected. Problems develop when tell others not to email messages that may contain messages which are in essence correct (809 area code) but are sent with a distribution list. Have been told that I cannot tell to whom they can email this information nor the manner in which it is sent Nice site design.I have my own at www.geocities.com/shailenderthakur. Any suggestions? First Person Plural Cameron West Interesting... not what I would usually look up, but why was your web page listed when I went to seach for gerbals (don't ask why) in altavista... who's stranger me or you? It looks like it's impacted. I would have it removed because of the angle at which it's growing in. My own wisdom teeth are grown in (all but one) and they look exactly like the molar that precedes them - upright and roughly the same size. Yours looks like it could cause trouble for the molar it is going to push against very soon. i have a wisdom tooth that looked much like that, and i didn't get it pulled (i haven't had any of mine pulled, and i'm pretty happy with my decision). if it's not causing you any pain, there's no reason to pull it. I tend to disagree about the general confusion regarding sxe. Your example of the champaign sipping doesn't make a whole lot of sense. What does sipping alcohol have to do with being happy about a friend's marriage. Its really difficult to fall into the cultural misconception that drinking = fun, but if you look at it directly, ones friend should be happy that you're at the wedding whether you drink or not. Besides kind words can say more than a sip of booze ever can. College has been very difficult for me as everyone I know drinks and most get drunk with some frequency. Does that mean I reject their friendships? No, but at the same time, I won't go to parties and watch my friends get loaded and do stupid things. I have better things to do with my time and my life.
so basically u r saying that wars and stuff can be prevented by people reading about you and watching you at work. please! Trust me, you'll feel SOOO much better just knowing that it's out of your mouth. It's a lot wiser to take the precaution of getting the tooth removed, rather then taking the risk of it causing you REAL pain further down the road. I have been having an on-going discussion with my brother, a qmail admin, about qmail and mail relaying in general, regarding POP3 mail sessions.
Yeah, and what's that big bottle next to you? I'm going to graduate with a dual MLS/MIS from IUB's School of Library and Information Science. I graduated from Earlham in 1993. Nice to know that someone is doing web design in Richmond! Hey Chris, you NEED to read It is one of the best books I have ever read! I understand COMPLETELY what you are saying about the value of learning from personal experience, and trusting your decision making skills. I believe that the strength that statements like "Drugs are bad for you", and "They're just wrong" are simply not strong enough to give a person confidence in themselves to not use drugs. 1. false positives - what percent of innocent email is bounced
2. detection rate - what percent of spam is detected
After reading various comments and comparisons found by googling, I decided to use:
sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org
It combines sbl and xbl lists so only 1 query is needed. sbl contains a list of verified spammers. xbl contains:
- the CBL (Composite Block List) from cbl.abuseat.org
- the BOPM (Blitzed Open Proxy Monitor) from opm.blitzed.org
- the NJABL open proxy IPs list from www.njabl.org.
As the following comparison shows, there are more aggressive lists that block more spam--but they also increase false positives.
http://www.sdsc.edu/~jeff/spam/cbc.html
Do your homework before using one or more blocklists. And good luck.
If you decide to use more than one blocklist, consider the impact on performance.

blown away by it! I am currently
helping to put together the course
materials for a critical thinking
course that will be based on Civil Disobedience. As the course
outline puts it:
"... will examine the concept of civil disobedience in America as
influenced by the ideas of Jefferson, Thoreau, King, Tolstoy, and
Gandhi. Through the exploration of these issue-based texts,
students will explore their own conscience and role as responsible
citizens."
I'm actually an artist and helping out a friend
who is teaching the class. She asked me to cover "the arts" and
such on things like protest, CD, etc.
I'm also put-ing together a reading list of stuff off the
web that pertain to the readings
that she's planning to have the
student's read. I would *really*
like to use your site as part of
this material. I don't think
that I've ever seen the ideas
of *intellegent conversation*
put so well; ie, conversation that
is not intended to argue but to pursue ideas and thoughts -- where-ever they might take them.
And the fact that your article is in the context of CD makes it even better. I will e-mail a
copy of this to you. Again,
Well Done!!!

Question 3: Traceability: The source code must be Open Source. Ok, but can I be sure?
In Ireland recently, the introduction of E-voting was stalled due to lack of openness in the system and due to traceability.

Be sure to use more than just one of these solutions. Also, remember that each organization is different in which solutions are viable. Thresholds for "false positives," acceptable keyword filtering, and white/black lists are variable from org to org. Your business partners may be on an RBL, not resolve properly on an RDNS, or may sell you mortgages or prescription drugs. In any case, don't fire and forget.
Thanks Chris for a great resource!

Not long ago on the radio show "This American Life", I heard a similar correlation. The story was told by a father relating to his 4 year old daughter why they celebrated the birth of Christ, and how he was killed. A couple months later, of course, the child asked about MLK. After hearing the explanation of MLK's message, the child asked, "did they kill him, too?"
Personally, this makes me think of the dangerous times in which we live. Not so much the very real fear of violence, but of the repression of "unpopular" or worse, "unpatriotic" ideas. The voice of peace takes many forms, but often finds the same fate.

My first stop was the "spamcontrol" qmail patch. I ran it for a few months. This patches qmail's smtpd daemon but still permitted mail to a bogus user to slip through to qmail's queue and didn't hook up to spamassassin at all. But it has a number of configuration files which help at the SMTP level (e.g. badmailfrom, badrcptto, etc)
The next stop was magic-smtpd (http://www.linuxmagic.com/opensource/magicmail/magic-smtpd/). This shows LOTS of promise but wasn't ready for production when I last looked at it. I particularly like the IP::Country capability -- a sad commentary on the number of open relays not in the USA...
What I am currently using is qpsmtpd (http://develooper.com/code/qpsmtpd/) which is a replacement for qmail's smtpd program in conjunction with spamassassin system-wide using spamd (qpsmtpd has a plugin to interface with spamassassin). You really need a good corpus of spam to train spamassassin though. This has made a big difference in the amount of spam that makes it to qmail's queue and hence to my users. It is very easy to tweak since it's all in perl so you can add or remove plugins depending on your own policies and needs. I have lots of praise for qpsmtpd. I still run the spamcontrol version of smtpd internally since Windows users sending outgoing mail have their timeout values low and spamassassin can take a long time to grind through their big email files to determine whether or not it should consider it spam.
I also have spamassassin and spambouncer (spambouncer.org) hooked up to procmail for a few individuals
Filtering only with procmail doesn't solve the load at the SMTP level or with qmail's queue. Ya gotta filter at the IP level or at the SMTP level to get off the spammers lists and make a dent in the amount of spam sent to your users. Tarpitting is nice but I have limited bandwidth to spare and returning 451 messages doesn't necessarily help my goal.
One final trick: change your smtpgreeting file to be a non-resolvable domain *from the outside* as if your machine is multi-homed with each interface having a different domain. A surprising number of spammers use the smtpgreeting file shown at the start of the SMTPD connection as a way to send mail to users at that domain. I couldn't find any RFC that says where the domain shown has to resolve for every smtp connection (i.e. the domain shown could resolve internally but not externally) qpsmtpd also has a check_earlytalker plugin which catches others that want to blast SMTP without waiting for the smtpgreeting message and a check_delivery plugin that knows about qmail's .qmail-alias naming convention (use top-of-tree CVS and grab from http://www.openminddev.net/files/qpsmtpd/plugins/check_delivery/)
I should also mention ASSP at http://assp.sourceforge.net. Another smtpd replacement mechanism that I need to look at again.
My next step is to dynamically use bandwidth management for SMTP as described in the Linux Advanced Routing & Traffic Control HOWTO to make sure my bandwidth isn't completely drained by a deluge of spam.
At any rate, I hope this helps somebody!

I have written a small wrapper for rblsmtpd that will handle the connection in case of bad reverse DNS:
#!/bin/sh
if [ ! $TCPREMOTEHOST ]; then
RBLSMTPD="No consistent A/PTR record for ${TCPREMOTEIP}.
fi
exec /usr/local/bin/rblsmtpd $*
This works very good for me and might be an idea to stay RFC-compliant.

It is unclear in this section whether you are talking about checking that a reverse exists, or actually comparing something (ehlo, whetever) against the forward.
Quite often, people can't get the reverse delegated so their provider or even the backbone provider still has the reverse, which, obviously, will be different than what a straight dns resolve will produce.

Hi Trix!
I was just reading through the guestbook of an Ishmael-related website, and
came across your entry. In this entry you speak of your being a surgeon and
your concern that you're "not letting nature run its course".
As a devout reader of Quinn's, I can guarantee you that nature does not
need you to step out of the way before it "takes its course". That is what
Daniel Quinn's books are about; they're not warning us that we need to stop
impeding nature's course, they're warning us of the course that nature will
have absolutely NO OTHER CHOICE but to take if we carry on as we have these
past ten millenia. Extinction for the Homo genus is what lies at the end of
the very short slide we're currently slipping down.
Human extinction won't occur as a result of a failure to renounce medicine,
or surgery. In fact, Leaver peoples have been practicing medicine for quite
some time, and even forms of surgery (i.e. trepanation). You're involved in
a valiant profession, and I respect you for this; I'm glad that you've
decided to keep with it. If human extinction occurs, it will occur because a
collapse of biodiversity as a result of our disregard for the Law of Life as
described in Ishmael.
You begin your entry by proclaiming that you do what you can for the good of
humanity. If you mean this, how can you close by noting that "your
generation" (I suppose you're referring to the American boomer subset) is
too "material minded" to look at things a different way, and then suggesting
that perhaps there is hope for the children? A mind-set revolution will
happen because we'll discover something we like to do more than what we did
before, not less. Otherwise, who would join the revolution? Does being
material-minded blind people to the fact that doing something that they like
is preferable to doing something that they don't like? Me, I've got a strong
suspicion that people would like to live sustainably (i.e. in accord with
Quinn's Law of Life). But If they found that they hated it, why should they
do it? And besides, if the permeation of materialism in a generation defines
its ability to steer its species off the street it's on, then we're in a
pretty icy street.
My point? Please, a thousand times PLEASE don't say:
'I am sure it won't be "my generation" that will try to turn things around.'
Why? Because in saying this you guarantee that you won't. Our Mother
Culture's voice is strong, and she's speaking through you when your fifteen
year old daughter hears you say that. Will your daughter one day say the
same thing? You don't cease to be involved in culture until you've taken
your last breath. Even after that, often. I'm a sixteen year old American
boy; what will I witness in the hundred-some years that scientists project I
have in this world? What about your daughter? And, of course, you? What will
you see in the substantial number of years you've got left? I'll tell you
one thing that you'll certainly see: what the fate of humanity will be.
Extinction or indefinite life. What a frightful and exciting time to live.
Please then, take those quotes off of "we" who must do something.
So, I really appreciate the time you've taken to listen to my $.02. Looking
over this email, I've got to apologize for the ranty-ness of it, but thanks
for reading. I'd really love it if you chose to read some more Daniel Quinn
stuff and maybe Ishmael again with a new perspective. Have a nice day.
Love,
Jamie

It is already pushing againest the next tooth, and the roots are starting to bend due to probably being pushed againest the jawbone.
I've had all my wisdom teeth impacted: two in a 45 degree angle (like yours) and the other two horizontally.
From them pushing againest the other teeth for so many years, the other teeth are getting 'holes' in them from the preassure being applied for so long.
The cost of getting the other teeth repaired is MUCH MUCH more than having the wisdom teeth extracted.
I only waited becuase I didn't have dnetal insurance,
or I would have done it sooner. I had to co-pay about$300 to have three or them removed.
Yeah, you bleed a bit for the first 24 hours, and they give ya codine for the pain. and your jaw is a bit sore for three days. But it really wasn't that bad overall.
I personally was able to eat a hamburger the next day,
but I had to wask out the hole it leaves of the little food chunks. Be sure todo that all the time till it heals closed. They should give you this plastic syrenge (no needle on it) to squirt/flush water/mouthwash into the hole so it doesn't get infected.
Sidenote... I trust doctors as much as I trust a convict on death row. If his/her attitude is "lets hurry this up, because I'm a busy person" get the hell out. There is absolutely no reason for any medical/dental practictioner to treat it's patients this way no matter what.
They do call it a medical/dental PRACTICE!!!

I devoured it because the story was so story like, I just couldn't wait to find out what happenned.
I was thoroughly confused during the history lesson. I was as dense as Alan Lomax could be. Not understanding what kind of history the present time of the book could hold. Quinn uses the question/ answer model very well to get information across, as he does in all his books, but for some reason i found myself disappointed in the technique this time. It was like the story was going along and then all of a sudden, "oh yeah, i should have known this would come at some point". Though i did enjoy the classroom setting, I wish that i could read a Quinn novel that gets the information across somehow without the question/ answer dialogue technique. I also found myself critical of Jason Tull Jr. as a character. I found his way of thinking to be too similar to Alan Lomax. I was grateful for the love affair though. I was getting tired of celibate characters!
I look forward to his next one and anyone else's thoughts on AD.

It's like they TOOK SOMETHING FROM ME! Maybe there's some market for used teeth...I was in Panama at the time, and there's no telling what corrupt things they do with other people's teeth. :)
Traumatic experience it was; have a few good stout drinks before you go your appointment.

Rblsmtpd does in fact work with multiple r's. One thing I ran into, however, was the fact that RBL and DUL work with the following syntax:
-rblackholes.mail-abuse.org
-rdialups.mail-abuse.org
...but RSS "only" works with the following syntax:
-r 'relays.mail-abuse.org:Open Relay - see '
...that is to say, it will fail if you use:
-rrelays.mail-abuse.org
...haven't tried ORBS yet, but now have RBL, RSS, and DUL (in that order) working on the same rblsmtpd instance.
Thanks for the great resource.

I'd like to offer two books that you might enjoy reading! The themes of which will be very familiar to you.... But the stories are absolutely delicious...wonderfully and perfectly told. The last and best book I read in 2000 was Kingsolver's Poisonwood Bible -- historical fiction (therefore educational) about a mission family located in the Congo during the 1950's. The first book I read in 2001 was Prodigal Summer by the same author -- in my opinion it'll be hard for me to find a more enjoyabe novel to read the remainder of this year.

This is a lie. But perhaps Ms. Nalis does not have the facts, and therefore believes what she has said. Here is the truth however.
My machine is on ORBS list becasue it was scanned. When scanned, I contacted ORBS asking for proof that was used as a spam relay, and asked them not to do such rude behavior again without proof/my premission.
I was in the static database one day before the 'appears ok' result was in the database, and less than 12 hours after the aggressive scan attack.
My machine has NEVER been an open relay, and ORBS knows this. Yet, they list me in their database *BECAUSE* I pubically have stated that ORBS is a net.terrorist. And, I refuse to roll over and pretend that the ORBS method is acceptable JUST to 'get off' of the ORBS list.

Sure there have been temptations, but I've realized that in most cases it is because I just want to fit in, and that's bullshit. Yes its unfortunate that some people simply can't comprehend a life without drugs and alcohol, but why should I compromise my beliefs just to feel more comfortable around people who are, to some degree intolerant.
Think of why many kids start using drugs in the first place. Its not because they're really interested in trying the drug. Its because everyone else is doing it. I think that being sxe is about showing others that there is always an alternative to drugs and alcohol.
That's why I generally reject kids who go out and beat non sxe people. Its ridiculous. Sxe is about making positive choices and having better, uplifting, things to do with ones life and I don't think that beating on people fits into that category. And yeah, I've seen so many kids do so many ugly things when drinking or using drugs and it kills me, and I know that it gets frustrating and sometimes you wish you could just "beat some sense" into them, but in the end that would be pretty futile.
I guess, I've been rambling. Basically what I want to say is that most of the contradictions that exist due to sxe really aren't there. I don't see what's so great about drugs and alcohol and I guess I never will. I would always rather skate, or go to a show, or read a book, pretty much anything than get drunk or get high, or hang out with people when they are getting stupid with the aforementioned activities. If people are so uncomfortable that they feel threatened by someone who isn't following the crowd, you have to ask yourself, "is it really worth hanging out with these kids?"
In terms of propaghanda, I think that dare often misses the point, but what it really comes down to, for me, is the question, "have drugs made anyone better?" Let's take a look at pot, probably the most inocuous drug out there. You're still inhaling burning pieces of dead plant into your lungs. That's not good. And compare smoking pot with all the other things one could be doing. You could be experiencing a show, unimpaired, taking in all the action and emotion with full clarity, you could be having a real, meaningful conversation, or you could be out doing something like skating or running, or riding a bike that benefits your body instead of exposing it to toxic substances. Sure, people can use drugs responsibly, but are they better off for it? Probably not.
Just my .02.

secure mail relay posted by Chris Up regarding /tech/qmail/qmail-antispam.html
on Oct 20, 2000 at 03:30:54 AM
My brother cites this Chris Johnson guy who claims that to accommodate users that want to send mail from a pop session “The best thing for them to do is to use the SMTP servers provided by their ISPs. There's (usually) no reason that they should have to use your server to relay their mail; any server that'll agree to relay their mail will work, and ISPs' servers are there to relay their customers' mail.” First of all I thought the crusade was to stop open relay, not encourage it. What if you are the only ISP for the user and the user wants to go out of state and use email from a friend’s ISP account via pop3? Can qmail accomidate?
I was trying to get across to my brother that an admin on a real MTA like Microsoft Exchange Server can configure the server to reroute mail for it’s FQDN but, to restrict “relay” only to authenticated users. Authenticated users can establish a POP or IMAP session and send to other domains the MTA is not responsible for, all the while restricting open relay and spoofing.
For example, if a nefarious individual where to telnet to port 25 and spoof the mail from: user@thisdomain
With a real email address for that MTA without an authenticated session, the mail is rejected with an error similar to this (I removed my FQDN for my protection from the session below)
220 ESMTP Server (Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Service 5.
5.2650.21) ready
helo
250 OK
mail from: chris@
250 OK - mail from
rcpt to: somedomain@nowhere.com
550 Relaying is prohibited
I used my real email address in the example above and was denied contrary to the type of postings I have read from Chris Johnson who states that “The way most people define "coming from one of my domains" is "has one of my domains in the sender address." The problem with this is that forging the sender address on a piece of mail is trivial, and you'd have to take the word of the sender that his address is what he says it is. There's clearly no security with this method.” When asked “Can't I allow relaying if the mail is coming from one of my domains?” A real MTA like Exchange can authenticate a user against the from field..
Here is an example where neither filed belongs to the FQDN of the mail server but it is denied. Hey, but I thought…………
220 ESMTP Server (Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Service 5.
5.2650.21) ready
helo from fakedomain.com
250 OK
mail from: fakeuser@nowhere.com
250 OK - mail from fakeuser@nowhere.com
rcpt to: someguy@noexist.com
550 Relaying is prohibited
In the session below I try to out-smart the MTA by using a real user’s email address in the from field, now remember Chris Johnson suggested.” The problem with this is that forging the sender address on a piece of mail is trivial, and you'd have to take the word of the sender that his address is what he says it is. There's clearly no security with this method.”
220 ESMTP Server (Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Service 5.
5.2650.21) ready
helo
250 OK
mail from: chris@ MY REAL FQDN REPLACED HERE
250 OK - mail from
rcpt to: somedomain@nowhere.com
550 Relaying is prohibited
Again, I was denied even though the address in the from field is a real user, but not an authenticated user so it was denied.
If I use an authenticated POP or IMAP session I can have full access to send and receive mail without using an archaic list of allowed domains, and I can get access to the directory service all the while preventing Spam.
I did not post this to bag on Chris Johnson. I am sure Chris is very smart and well qualified. I am sincere about that. I have read his postings and get the impression he knows a thing or two about SMTP, but some misinformation is being distributed to mail admin’s; especially newbies.
So, my reason for posting is to ask why qmail can’t do manage to accept secure POP sessions without limiting functionality. If qmail can do it, how does one accomplish this real MTA functionality?
This functionality can be setup on a real MTA like Exchange server in about 1 minute (and then just has one has to restart the IMC service to activate the change.) I know that qmail is well regarded in the industry, shoot, Microsoft is stuck with a modified, proprietary version of it at Hotmail.
I checked the ORBS database against the Hotmail mx records and they don’t seem to be registered as OPEN RELAY, yet a client can use Hotmail from anywhere. I tried to spoof it myself and was unsuccessful.
So qmail can operate like a real MTA? Or can it? Well, at least it’s free!
